1/3 + 1/3 +1/3

Here's a quick 2-3 hour drawing from class

Couldn't make up my mind, so it started off as an analytical measurement study, and then slowly shifted towards a notan [pure black and white drawing with flat, graphic shapes], and then started rendering some of the form out. I only had about 3 hours of sleep so that might've been why I couldn't make up my mind on what I wanted to concentrate on. Keeping things fun is always important.

Also, i'll be heading off to Singapore soon, will post inspirational sights and landscapes and all that. Yay!

Best,

J

new one

The new term started this week! Was growing restless with just drawing and experimenting in my room.. I think life drawing may very well be good for the soul :)

This is around 2.5 hours, charcoal on newsprint

Last portrait

Here's the last portrait of the term. I really enjoyed working on this one. Much thanks to Ron for pushing me on figuring out how to solve the blank background/composition issues. Can't wait for the next term!

Can you dig it?

Here are the updated deer people and a portrait from class. I'm having lots of fun incorporating graphic elements into the pages. Cheers!

the importance of being idle

Here are some things from sketch night at the studio and a figure from class. I've been using my pocket sized moleskine for just about everything and I love it. The pages can take a fair beating from my pen, ink, and watercolor disasters.

double triumvirate

Here are some of the better drawings from class... dare I say that things are starting to "click?"

waiting for that beat to kick in

A few more things...

...last figure session for this term. I did the lay in and totally butchered the face, but the rendering was done by Ron. Much thanks to him for all the help :)

...and a couple of really quick pages just messing around.

'round midnight

A short, 3 hour drawing from class. And also a close up from the last drawing.

who are you, girl in blue?

Here's the last portrait of the term from tonight.

Had two, 3 hour sessions to work on it. I struggled a bit during the first sitting but felt like I was able to tie it all together in the end. The model was looking around the entire time so I had trouble capturing the inquisitive expression that he had while his eyes were to the left. Felt that it'd make for a more interesting portrait that way rather than when he was looking straight ahead. Much thanks to Ron for all the help. This definitely wouldn't have turned out the way it did without the guidance from class.

Also, apologies in the picture quality. For once, i'm actually somewhat satisfied with the drawing and wanted to take pictures right away. The subtleties in the face and arms can't really be seen under poor lighting.. i'll take close ups during the day time. I had a lot of fun in the 2nd sitting and kinda just dove into rendering without all the caution and hesitation that I usually have. Sometimes you just gotta go for it [art, music, love], right?

scribbledos and scribbledonts

Here are some random pages, the majority of it from reference or ninja-ing it up at coffee shops.

And the final session with the 2nd model. Focused on the face with the last session so I could learn the beginnings of polishing up a drawing. I'm excited about the next term starting soon, still not sure what to take though...

Thanks :)

Here's a little somethin' somethin'. Another one of the better figures from quick-sketch, another session with the long-pose (one more week left, whee!), and an update on the moleskine page. Seems like the red tint from my curtains is more apparent at night for some reason...

And on a more personal level, i'd like to give thanks to those that have helped me out throughout the years. Sometimes I feel the need to show my appreciation, to my family and friends, thank you.

Take care,
J

Here's the [mole]skinny

Hey everyone, here's another small update. Just a few figures from my quick-sketch class, another session from the long-pose, and a page from my mole-skinny. I've been really enjoying working with pen and ink. It brings back the fun of doodling from when I was in elementary school again.

Ones, threes, and fives

Here's the first session of another 4 week pose. I feel like i'm finally getting a hang of the lay-in process.

Here are some figures from my quick sketch class:
